  1. I was fascinated by the front page article on John Wesley DeKay: "DeKay Brought Back in Bank Loot Case; A Fugitive 12 Years. Accused of Misappropration of $200,000 From Providence Institution. Trailed by Scotland Yard." etc. The guy was as big a crook as you can imagine. Not only did he swindle the goverment of Mexico into buying his "meat-packing plant", but he swindled the Atlantic National Bank into investing in this so-called business. While his confederates all went to prison, this guy goes to Europe, where he swindles the French into buying non-existent rifles and ammo (which he probably sold to the Germans). The guy ends up a multi-millionaire, fancies himself a writer, bribes Sarah Bernhardt to act in his play called -- get this -- Judas. I would love to know how this story ended up. If you look up his Wikipedia article, there is nothing about his criminal activities. His obituary on p. 23 of the Oct. 8, 1938 edition merely mentions he's an "author and capitalist". Fascinating how he became completely white-washed. Sorry for taking up all this space.
