Today -100: September 16, 1925: Walker walks it

NYC Mayor John Hylan is defeated in the Democratic primary by Tammany- and Gov. Smith-backed Jimmy Walker by a margin large enough to forestall any idea he had of running as an independent in the general. He does especially badly in Manhattan. The fountain pen guy wins the Republican primary, not that that matters in the slightest.

  1. The NYT goes a bit overboard in its relief at the defeat of Hylan: "New York may breathe more easier this morning. It has got rid of a vulgar and debasing tyranny. No longer need it live in dread of what a hollow mockery in the City Hall, sustained by the Hearst newspapers, may do in a municipal election. That curse is removed."
