Today -100: August 29, 1925: Of fighters

NYC Mayor John Hylan responds to Gov. Alfred E. Smith, denying his accusation that he negotiated with the Klan at the 1924 Democratic Convention. Hylan says he’s a fighter. Smith retorts, sure, ‘cuz he fights with fucking EVERYONE. He says Hylan doesn’t understand his grade-elimination program in Queens.

  1. The editorial board of the NYT look upon Gov. Smith as a citizen-savior of the city! "The city is once more placed under a great obligation to Governor Smith. But for his active influence in the counsels of his party there is little doubt that Mayer Hylan would have had another nomination. From that the Governor has saved us...This great service to the community has been performed by the Governor simply in the loyal devotion to the city of one of its sons." They are no fans of Hylan.

  2. Whether it's the job of the governor to intervene in city politics is another question entirely. As for the NYT, well, Hylan is supported by the Hearst press, so there's that.
