Rep. Ogden Livingston Mills is the NY Republican Party’s “reserve candidate” for governor if Columbia Pres. Nicholas Murray Butler continues to refuse to accept the nomination. Mills meets the requirements the R’s think are essential for success: he’s from New York City and is a Wet. Like Alfred Smith, Mills would be a reluctant candidate, preferring to run for re-election to Congress and then for Senate in ‘28.

Nicholas Murray was definitely a horse's ass. He expelled Jewish students from Columbia, adored Mussolini and Hitler, black-balled Hemingway from receiving the Pulitzer for "For Whom the Bell Tolls", and expelled the class president for being anti-Nazi. Glad he wasn't nominated, but it says a lot that he was the preferred candidate.
