Mexican Pres. Plutarco Elías Calles rejects yesterday’s appeal from the Catholic Episcopate for a deal, which would consist of the government suspending the clauses in the Constitution relating to religion and the laws enforcing them, and the Church in return doing, um, nothing. He suggests they try to appeal to Congress and the court rather than him.
