Today -100: June 21, 1922: First women

Anna Dickie Olesen wins the Minnesota Democratic primary for US Senate, the first major party nomination of a woman for the Senate. This follows the D. party convention’s endorsement of her. She will lose the general election. Mrs Peter Oleson, as she and her husband would prefer she not to be called, reassures that women’s participation in politics need not interfere with housework.

The Countess Markievicz, the first woman elected to the British Parliament, although she didn’t take her seat, is defeated for re-election to the Dáil.
